Route 12E Detour – Message from Town Supervisor, Christine Stark

I know the bridge project and detours in 3 Mile Bay have created some frustration and inconvenience for many of us in Cape. While no detour is perfect, it’s important to recognize that NYSDOT did listen to concerns raised by residents and local leaders by identifying alternate routes, including bicycle routes and directions to local businesses. Some of those directions could have been clearer – as many of us had never even heard of Shaver Creek before this project.

Our Highway Department has spent the last month preparing detour roads with pavement repairs, brush clearing, and shoulder widening where possible. Additional traffic-calming signs have also been ordered for Burnt Rock Road. We expect them to be posted in the next week.

As neighbors, we can do our part by slowing down. Driving a little below the posted 55 mph speed limit is a small inconvenience that can make a big difference for the families who live along these roads.  Their livestock, children and farm equipment are certainly worthy of consideration.  Town officials have also requested additional patrols from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and continue coordination with NYSDOT in an effort to streamline the process.

At the end of the day, these bridge improvements are being completed for the safety of everyone who travels these roads. A little patience and courtesy will help us get through the construction season safely.
